The EC Regulations on the use of ozone depleting substances came into force on 1 October 2000.
Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) are man-made chemicals that can cause damage to the earth’s ozone layer and are used in refrigeration and air-conditioning.
Most ODS are already banned in the EU, but the Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) that remain in use are due to be phased out soon.
Virgin HCFCs were banned in January 2010, allowing only recycled materials to be used for service, maintenance and topping up of systems and in
January 2015 these will also be prohibited.
